Busting Some of the Most Common AdSense Myths in the Industry

By Wick

AdSense, Google's flagship publisher product, is used to monetize around 11 million websites, making it the most prevalent method of website monetization worldwide. It's user-friendly enough for even the smallest publisher to implement yet robust enough to contribute to the revenue model of industry leaders.

Given that AdSense has attracted millions of users, there is no shortage of 'experts' who claim to know everything there is to know about the service. Some have demonstrated competence in this area by obtaining a certification from Google. However, many people who are not knowledgeable enough about AdSense add to the proliferation of misconceptions about the platform.

To help you separate fact from fiction, we've compiled a list of the most common AdSense myths and debunked every one of them.

Myth 1: "You need to have a domain that is at least six months old in order to use AdSense."

Typically untrue. Domains indeed need to be at least six months old in some countries, such as China and India, but it is not a rule of thumb across all countries. In most cases, as long as there is enough pieces of high-quality content, there is no hard and fast rule about the length of time a site owner must be in control. Having said that, waiting six months won’t do you any harm. It can help increase your chances of being accepted if you continuously produce high-quality content for at least a few months before applying.

Myth 2: "You need at least X,000,000 page views per month to qualify for AdSense."

False. Google does not specify the minimum number of unique daily visitors needed to apply for an AdSense account. We advise publishers to wait until they have a steady stream of visitors before applying, but the most crucial factor is having plenty of high-quality, original content. It's possible to get accepted into the AdSense program even if your site doesn't receive a lot of traffic, provided you meet the other requirements, but you won't make much money from the ads.

Myth 3: "With AdSense, you must have at least X and no more than Y advertisements on each page."

False. AdSense does not have any hard limits on the number of ads that can appear on a page, contrary to popular belief. Previously, there was a limit of three per page, but that was lifted in 2016. Advertisements cannot take up more space on a page than the original material does, nor can the original content be secondary to the ads. This is one of Google's few regulations for publishers. Ads may be restricted or disabled on sites that breach these guidelines.

Myth 4: "AdSense isn't going to make you rich."

False. We know numerous publishers whose AdSense income would make their bank manager blush, so it's not only viable to make a living off of it but it is also quite common.

However, you shouldn't expect to get rich so soon with AdSense. Making decent money with AdSense requires a lot of time and effort. You'll need a large user base, a platform that advertisers find appealing, and the ability to generate substantial revenue if you want to succeed in this industry. It's important to note that many people who say you can't make money with AdSense just lack the expertise required to succeed.

Diversification is a prudent strategy, of course. Our advice is to diversify your income if you are making a comfortable living from AdSense alone.

Don’t fall into the trap of misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about Google AdSense, but the most common ones are that it's too difficult, that it doesn't generate enough revenue, and that it's not worth the effort. However, as we've seen, AdSense is quite easy to set up and can be a very lucrative way to monetize your website or blog. So if you're thinking about using AdSense, don't let these myths stop you; give it a try!
